New Orlean’s has much to offer all year round: From tasty traditional food and restaurants taking the eats of New Orleans to new levels to the colorful environment steeped in music, and the welcoming culture of New Orleans, there is always something to do here! Many come to our city for Mardi Gras, but one event, the only event that rivals Mardi Gras in scale is the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Tradition

Jazz Fest isn’t just a large festival of jazz music: Jazz Fest includes artists of many genres and is a celebration of New Orleans and Louisiana culture. Jazz Fest began in 1970 by the New Orleans Hotel Motel Association. The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation was born at the same time and owns the festival.  As we mentioned previously, what began as a small celebration, the first Jazz Fest only cost $3, has grown to a much anticipated large scale event, bringing Mardi Gras-sized crowds to celebrate.

Here are 4 reasons why you should come to Jazz Fest this year:

The Music

Obviously, if you don’t like music, this festival isn’t for you, but if you enjoy music, as well as the feel and culture of music festivals this is an event you can’t miss! This year the lineup includes names such as Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Maroon 5, Dave Matthews and tim Reynolds, Kings of Leon, Usher & The Roots, Lorde, Snoop Dog, Alabama Shakes, Pitbull and more!

The Food

If you’ve read any of our previous blog posts, you know that New Orleans is a mecca for food lovers. Not only do you have access to New Orleans food, but also the festival itself has food that will more than satisfy a foodie’s taste buds.

Come to Jazz Fest and Stay With Us

Though crafts isn’t the first thing that you probably think of when you think of a music festival, but for Jazz Fest, it is a part of the festivities that you don’t want to miss. Artists and artisans bring their wares for viewing and purchases: You will have access to the Congo Square African Marketplace, Louisiana Marketplace, Contemporary Crafts, more!

Celebration of Cuban Culture

This year Jazz Fest is celebrating New Orleans’ deep connections to Cuba and Cuban culture with over 150 Cuban artists invited to be a part of the festival, and a stage dedicated to Cuban music. Musicians, poets, artwork and more will be featured as part of the celebration.
